15 Expert Travel Hacks You Need to Know

In this post, myself along with some of my travel friends share our favourite travel hacks that will make you travel smarter and cheaper.

15) “This travel hack is for you guys who think you don’t have money to travel. Here’s what you do. You take one dollar and you put it in a bank account every single day for one month. Then you have 30 dollars! Congratulations! That’s not a lot of money, but what you’ve done is you’ve planted the seed and that’s what you need to get started. You’ve put the idea in your head that it’s possible. You can see that bank account grow and that’s your motivation. [Tweet “By starting the process, that’s how you make anything work in life.”] You should do that.” – Mike Corey of Kick the Grind

14) “If you ever find yourself in a bit of a pickle while on the road, a great way to reach out to companies is to use through Twitter. Tweet the company, hotel, etc. you’re having issues with because they usually have a customer service representative solely monitoring their Twitter account. It’s a great way to get feedback instantly without having to go through email or a phone.” – Nadine Sykora of Hey Nadine

13) “It’s so important that when you travel you’re getting clean water and this also includes ice cubes. Make sure that when you get ice cubes, they aren’t made with tap water. Ice cubes that have a little hole in the centre are made with fresh clean water. The one’s that don’t may have been made with tap water.” –Siya Zarrabi of Good News & Hopscotch the Globe

12) [Tweet “Always bring some chocolate bars or candies for the flight attendants. A little bit of money spent on that will go a long way.”] Not only will they be happier on their flight, but they also might give you some better service.” – Cailin O’Neil of Travel Yourself

11) “If you’re gonna travel, get yourself some dry sacs. Dry sacs are amazing for several reasons. A) They waterproof your stuff. B) They can work as vacuum seal bags to help you compress down your stuff and C) You can use them for any sort of rain storm that you encounter. Stuff your electronics into your dry sacs you’re good to go.” – Chris of Captain and Clark

10) “If you’re staying in a hotel room that doesn’t have a fridge, you can ask the front desk for a fridge to be added to your room or you can change to a room that has one. Typically it costs a bit, but if you tell them you have a medical reason, they’ll give it to you for free. That way you can go grocery shopping, stack your fridge, and then you don’t always have to spend all of that money on eating at restaurants.” – Kristen Sarah of Hopscotch the Globe

9) “My travel motto is actually a Susan Heller quote and says: [Tweet ““When you pack, take half the clothes and twice as much money.””] This has really worked for me. Although, I’m still getting better at the clothes thing.” – Sabina Trojanova of Girls vs Globe

8) “My number one travel hack is to bring an unlocked smart phone. This smart phone has got everything you need from a technological point of view. Unless you’re creating lots of content, in which case you’ll need a laptop. A smart phone has a very good camera and if it’s unlocked, you can pick up a SIM card at the airport. You should get a basic data plan so when you’re not on Wi-Fi at a hotel or restaurant, you’re still connected.” – Rob of Stop Having a Boring Life

7) “My big secret travel hack is actually dry shampoo because you can go days without actually washing your hair.” – Tawny Clark of Captain and Clark

6) “Take only a carry on! This way you only take stuff you need for a week, and then just do laundry if you need to. Also, if you travel you can save a lot of money by doing that because when you only take a carry on, you don’t need to pay the extra cost for checked luggage.” – Steve Hänisch of Backpacker Steve

5) “I always pack my running shoes when I’m traveling so I can go for a run and explore places off the beaten path. The places I discover are the ones I usually wouldn’t see if I wasn’t exploring by foot. Another plus side is I stay healthy and fit while I travel.” – Carina of Travel, Run, Play

4) “The travel hack I recommend is on your phone. It’s Google maps, believe it or not. And the best thing about Google maps is that anywhere in the world it can work. You need to download the offline maps, turn on your GPS, and it’ll track you on the maps. If you’re walking or driving in a foreign country, it’s a fantastic tool to have because it’s free and will get you where you need to go.” – Alex Chacon of The Modern Motorcycle Diaries

3) “The biggest travel tip I can give is to talk with locals. They always know the most about your current location and can offer you some great places to see or things to do.” – Gareth Leonard of Tourist2Townie

2) “I have a bunch of travel reward credit cards because the bonus miles you can get just for signing are huge. Every time you use that credit card, you receive point which can be applied to free flights or upgrades.” – Matty Brown of Matty Brown Films

1) “Have you ever heard of the Ryanair Suit? It’s basically a suit with a lot of pockets. Since you are typically only allowed to bring one carry-on bag on a flight, with this suit you can stash a whole lot of extra stuff in your pockets.” – Caspar of StoryTravelers
