Barbados Food Porn

Share the Love!

Food plays a big part in every culture. Therefore, trying new foods and beverages when you’re travelling will add a lot to your overall experience. In this video, I get some advice from the locals of Speightstown, Barbados on the best places to grab some local grub…and rum.

I particularly enjoyed biting my teeth into the delicious mammee apple. This sweet and meaty fruit comes from a large, evergreen tree native to the Caribbean region. What looks like a large apriocot with a rough exterior tastes like no other fruit I’ve ever tried. It has a very unique and enjoyable flavor. While the mammee apple is typically stewed, it can also be eaten raw.

As they say in Barbados: Do as the Bajans do! Well, maybe they don’t say that but whatever excuse you need to try the local rum.

Bajans sure love their rum at any time of day, every day of the week. If you’re deciding on what rum to sip on, Mount Gay is a fine choice. This rum is made in Barbados, has a distinct flavour and is best combined with some coke over ice.

Some other favourite dishes and beverages I tried during my travels in Speightstown include:

  • Flying Fish
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Plantain
  • Frutee Ginger Beer
  • Banks Beer

Overall, I enjoy the food and drink Barbados had to offer. One of my favourite moments was drinking a Banks beer while watching sunset over the turquoise sea. The combination of the gold fizzy beverage, crashing waves and beautiful yellows and oranges that painted the sky made the entire experience unforgettable. I highly suggest trying this during your visit to the island of Barbados. If you don’t drink alcohol, a ginger beer will also do the trick!
