Leaving Without Notice

Imagine this…

You wake up one morning and tell yourself you are ready for adventure. However, on this particular morning, you want to step out of the box, test your limits, and do something you’ve never done before. What comes to mind?

For me, it’s packing a bag, taking a bus to the closest airport, and booking a plane ticket anywhere in the world… without telling a single soul! Sounds kind of crazy, right? What about work? What about family and friends? What about responsibility? Well, of course you wouldn’t want to jeopardize any opportunities! You also don’t have to leave for months or years, even a spontaneous weekend away will do.

Pack your bag and just go!

Has this ever been an idea of yours?

When I do in fact turn this idea into action, perhaps I’ll fly to Cuba and dance the night away, London to hit the markets, or Australia to scuba dive.  The possibilities are endless! Wherever I end up, I just know that I plan to leave without notice one day. I won’t tell anyone I’m leaving, and I will just go. It doesn’t have to be for a long time; in fact, I think a weekend would feel the most spontaneous.  I just want the thrill of leaving without telling anyone else.  However, I know that I’ll eventually have to tell my close ones (but only once I arrive at my destination), so they don’t think that I’ve been kidnapped. When I do go on this spontaneous adventure, I don’t even want to know that I’m going to do it until the day before or of my departure day. I can already feel my adrenaline pumping just thinking about it. Spontaneous travel is the kind of adventure that really gets me going. I love not knowing what’s going to happen. I love arriving in a new place without any plans. I love having all the possibilities in the world open to me.  How lucky I am to have so many options in this life.

The road to adventure awaits you!

Now it’s time for you to inspire me!

Have you ever taken off somewhere without giving notice?

  • The end of July 2013 and beginning of Aug 2012 I worked as a dental assistant in Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador (Canada). My dentist had to go out of town for 2 weeks, so 2 days after he left I hitchhiked the dirt road leading out of town, and made my way down south through the west coast of Newfoundland.

My brother and my best friend were the only ones who knew. My brother drove me to the highway and upon leaving he said to me, “Call me in an hour when you get bored”. I had left on a Monday and by Tuesday afternoon I made it to Corner Brook, Newfoundland. I called my mom, who was really worried because she knew something was up and was panicking. Then I took the ferry to Nova Scotia off to Waterville, NS to go SKY DIVING!

I walked into the Atlantic School of Sky Dving trailer that was their office for the summer and said “Hi, I’m Robin, I just hitchhiked here from Labrador” It was quite the tale of random adventures and friendships after and previous to that. Everyone got a kick out of how I randomly showed up with all my stuff. They even brought me to the zoo! Saw my first ever ZONKEY!

The real hitchhiking experience slowly diminished as one of the frequent sky divers was nice enough to drive me back to the ferry after I jumped and my boyfriend picked me up in Newfoundland. Before that whole weekend hitchhiking was one of those things I was curious about, but I never thought I would actually try it and that if I did, it would be an epic fail. But it was quite the opposite. That’s how I want to travel Europe now.

  • Sounds like fun but I think I would at least tell one person.  Call me practical but I wouldn’t want to come back to a bill for a false missing person search 🙂

  • I think your idea is awesome!I love to travel so much myself that my friend and I are actually doing something very similar. We are moving to Mexico in the next 2 weeks and will begin working, traveling, and exploring all the way down into South America eventually. We are young and a lot of people think its risky but we love adventure! The only thing is we are blogging about the whole experience and showing others how they can do the same. I’d love for you to check us out at http://www.2guystrippin.com and thanks for your motivation! It’s great seeing that other people love traveling and adventure as much! Best of luck!

  • Yes! Love this idea. I am very spontaneous about travel, and though I’ve never just taken off on *that day* I’ll often book a trip two weeks before I have to depart. I’ve often got a bucket list of places in my head so unless it’s a very unusual kind of trip, it’s never that hard to plan on the fly.

  • That sounds like so much fun! I have never decided on a destination that late, but I am a fan of using sky scanner and letting it pick the cheapest destination for your dates. It does make you travel to some random places

  • Jobs are over-rated 🙂

I can’t do spontaneous travel, though! For me, I like to research a place for 2-3 months before I decide to go, at least if I’m going internationally. If it’s just somewhere local and my friends ring me up and they’re like “oi, vamanos!” I’m always down for the trip, and since I life in different cities around the world I’m always exploring something new. But picking up to go to another country at the drop of a hat….nope, not for me!

One way to get around that is to establish a passive income through a website offering a service or product. Anyone can start a travel blog and start selling advertising space…but there are also thousands of things you can do to generate continual income so you don’t have to stress about plane tickets/travel costs.

  • YES! I so could do that – take off and not give a minute thought to it 🙂
We did that years ago. Hubby was working in Mackay and we only had two sons. He had the week off and it was his Grandads Birthday – so we got in the car and drove all the way down to Sydney to surprise the family. Cant remember how long it took but it was close to 18 hours of driving.
It was the best fun and we loved every minute of it.
Could easily book a one way ticket to somewhere/anywhere. Would love the adventure!

  • I would totally love to do this one day! I think it’s kind of hit and miss when it comes to how much to ticket would cost, so I’d have to have money in the bank. But I love the fact that you wouldn’t have to have that waiting feeling – when you book something and have to wait weeks or months until you leave!
