As I mentioned in a previous post, I am officially a member of the Sony Club. Sony flew myself and 10 other bloggers to San Diego, California where we spent half a day playing with products at the Sony Headquarters and the other half betting on horse races. The following day was also spent tour the city by sailboat and learning about sea lions that are trained to capture swimmers. But more about that later.
I woke up after a much needed night rest in one of the most comfortable hotel beds I’ve ever slept in. The W Hotel may have a puddle for a pool, but they have darn good beds! After a delicious buffet breakfast consisting of fruit, muesli, scrambled eggs, freshly squeezed juice and coffee, the Sony team jumped on board the party bus that would be taking us around the city for the next couple of days.
We drove down streets lined with Palm trees and views of bleached blond hotties riding ocean waves on surf boards. We eventually reached a building that had four beautiful letters written on it (S-O-N-Y), and I knew I was in for a treat. The entire bus was all smiles as each member of the Sony Club anticipated what was about to come. We all quickly rushed off of the bus and into the front lobby of the Sony Headquarters.
After a lot of oos and ahhs, all of us bloggers were guided into a large room. The room contained rows of chairs topped with fancy backpacks on each and several stations set up with Sony experts surrounded by products. I quickly became overwhelmed with excitement and wonder. Were the products before me about to find themselves a new home in my arms? As I admired all of the products that surrounded me, Phil Molyneux, Sony President & COO, entered the room to officially welcome us to the Sony Club. He told us that each of us were carefully selected, and he couldn’t be more pleased with the group of bloggers who would be testing out the Sony gear.
Directly after Mr. Molyneux left the room, all of us bloggers were given the go to spend some time at each Sony product station, learning about the gear and trying it out for ourselves. After learning about each product, each blogger received a fancy box containing that product…to keep…like forever! I felt like a kid on Christmas!
Following this incredible experience at the Sony headquarters, we jumped on the party bus once again. Where were we heading this time? We were off to experience something I had yet to in my lifetime…. horse racing!
We arrived at the Del Mar Racetrack shortly before the racing would begin so that we could meet the stars before they took to the track. Each horse was quite the character.
It was interesting to witness this kind of culture. Del Mar was packed with horse racing enthusiasts of all ages. I thought that the racing would happen one directly after the other, but that is not the case. One race takes about a minute to complete, which is followed by a twenty-minute intermission before the next race. I must also mention how intense the crowd gets during the racing. The stands looks like there are a bunch of crazy baboons on the lose with hands flaring everywhere and words of all kinds being shouted out. I guess that’s what happens when you bet a lot of money on an animal.
After a few hours spent at Del Mar Racetrack, the group headed to the beach for sunset to test out the new Sony NEX 5R we were given. In all honesty, I fell in love with the camera within minutes of receiving it, but it wasn’t until I learned some new tricks from the Sony experts that I became obsessed with the camera. I have been shooting with the Sony NEX 5N for the past two years, which I have been really happy with, but the 5R is much more impressive. From the flip screen to the colour to the various in-camera photo touching features to the size to the interchangeable lens, this camera rocks! I could go on about it, but I’ll save that for another post.
After snapping away for a good hour, we all headed to for dinner. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, the food at Kitchen 1540 proved me wrong. If you’re looking for an excellent dining experience with mouth-watering cuisine, head on over to this restaurant in Del Mar. You don’t be disappointed.
The day ended with me rushing back to my hotel room to play with my new toys and getting some rest for next day with the Sony Club.
