Discovering Winnipeg: The Forks and Beyond
The Forks
A visit to Winnipeg isn’t complete without exploring The Forks, Manitoba’s top tourist attraction, drawing in over 4 million visitors each year. The Forks is a bustling hub of culture, cuisine, and history. Families can indulge in a wide array of dining options, from casual eats to fine dining, craft beer to wine kiosks, and an eclectic mix of little shops. The vibrant atmosphere, combined with the scenic views along the river, makes it the perfect spot for a family outing.
Forks National Historic Site Walking Tour
For a deeper dive into the area’s history, the Forks National Historic Site Walking Tour offers a fun and interactive way to learn about the region’s past. Even our five-year-old found the tour engaging and enjoyable, proving that history can be both educational and entertaining for all ages.
Winnipeg Waterways River Tour
After exploring The Forks, hop aboard the Winnipeg Waterways River Tour. This relaxing boat ride provides a unique perspective of the city as you cruise along the historic rivers. It’s a serene way to take in the sights and sounds of Winnipeg from a different angle.
Journey to Churchill at Assiniboine Park Zoo
Another must-visit in Winnipeg is the Journey to Churchill exhibit at Assiniboine Park Zoo. This award-winning exhibit is the most comprehensive of its kind, allowing visitors to get up close with polar bears and other Arctic animals in an immersive experience. It’s not only a chance to see these majestic creatures but also an opportunity to learn about biodiversity, climate change, and conservation.
Gather Craft Kitchen and Bar
A short tram ride from the zoo brings you to Gather Craft Kitchen and Bar, located within The Leaf, an indoor horticultural attraction. This restaurant serves up delicious, locally sourced, globally inspired modern prairie cuisine. The menu is inspired by the natural world, with ingredients sourced from the park’s gardens and local Manitoba growers.
The Leaf
After a satisfying meal, take a stroll through The Leaf’s lush gardens, where you can experience different climates under one roof. The Leaf at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg features four unique rooms: the Tropical Biome, showcasing lush tropical plants; the Mediterranean Biome, with flora from Mediterranean climates; the Babs Asper Display House, offering rotating seasonal displays; and the Shirley Richardson Butterfly Garden, home to vibrant butterflies.
The Manitoba Museum and Lower Fort Garry
For those who enjoy indoor family summer activities in Winnipeg, the Manitoba Museum offers an educational journey through time with interactive exhibits.
Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site
Another one of our favourite family summer activities in Winnipeg is Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, where you can step back in time to the 1850s and experience life in the Red River Valley. The site features interactive experiences with staff dressed in period attire, making it a fun and immersive way to learn about the region’s history.
Pine Ridge Hollow
Just outside of Winnipeg, Pine Ridge Hollow is a perfect stop for a mix of shopping, nature, and dining. The farm-to-table menu at the Pine Ridge Hollow Restaurant uses seasonal produce and herbs from the garden, creating a unique and flavourful dining experience. The dishes are fresh, locally sourced, and bursting with summer flavours.
Music, Festivals, and Fun at Winnipeg Folk Festival
If you’re visiting Manitoba in the summer, time your trip to coincide with the Winnipeg Folk Festival. This annual tradition fills Birds Hill Park with great music, vibrant energy, and a strong sense of community. The festival features a diverse lineup of artists from around the world and offers more than just music—it’s a celebration of culture, creativity, and togetherness. With a dedicated children’s area, it’s an ideal event for families.
Exploring Nature at Riding Mountain National Park
After the excitement of the city, retreat into nature at Riding Mountain National Park. Just a few hours’ drive from Winnipeg, this national park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. We stayed at Arrowhead Family Resort, where brand new cabins offer all the comforts of home with the beauty of nature right at your doorstep. The town of Clear Lake is charming, with boutique shops, restaurants, and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy.
E-bike Adventures
One of the best ways to explore the park is by e-bike. You can rent an e-bike from Clear Lake Bike Rentals. We spent an afternoon on an e-bike adventure, discovering hidden paths and enjoying the park’s natural beauty.
Sunset Cruises
Afterward, I recommend an evening sunset cruise on the lake with Clear Lake Sunset Cruise aboard the Martese. The serene waters and stunning sunset views are the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.
Relaxing at the Spa
For a bit of pampering, the Klar So Noric Spa at Riding Mountain National Park offers a Nordic-inspired experience, complete with cold and hot pools, saunas, and relaxation rooms. It’s the perfect way to rejuvenate after a day of outdoor activities.
Whitehouse Bakery and Restaurant
Whitehouse Bakery and Restaurant in Clear Lake is a popular spot for both locals and visitors, known for its delicious baked goods…especially their famous cinnamon buns. If you have a sweet tooth, you definitely need to add this place to your list when you’re in Riding Mountain National Park.
Bison Safari at Lake Audy
No trip to Riding Mountain National Park is complete without a visit to the Lake Audy Bison Enclosure. A self-guided evening driving safari offers an up-close look at these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. It’s a magical experience, especially for kids, who will be thrilled to count the baby bison roaming the area.
