Testing MobileSIM in Montenegro: A Cheap & Reliable eSIM Option for Travelers

As full-time travelers, we’re always on the lookout for new tools that help us stay connected while on the road. Lately, Kristen and I have been diving into the world of eSIMs—digital SIM cards that make switching between data plans in different countries easy. There are many different eSIM providers out there, and we’ve tried out many to see which ones are the most reliable and affordable. During our recent trip to Montenegro, I decided to give MobileSIM a try… and this is what I think…

First…Why Try a Travel eSIM?

Before sharing more about MobileSIM, let’s break down what an eSIM is to begin with. If you’re not familiar with eSIMs yet, they’re essentially virtual SIM cards you can activate directly on your phone. You don’t need to swap out your physical SIM or wait in line at a local carrier shop to get connected while abroad. We’ve tried a handful of eSIM providers before (we love testing them out to see which ones are actually worth recommending), and MobileSIM recently made it onto our radar.

Our MobileSIM Experience in Montenegro

I was connected to another eSIM provider upon arrving in Montenegro and once that plan was up, I downloaded the MobileSIM, purchased a week-long plan and activated it. The whole process took less than five minutes and worked seamlessly on my iPhone.

Here’s what stood out during my time using it:

  • It was cheap. Honestly, one of the most affordable options we’ve seen for Europe. It’s hard to beat the price point when you’re looking to keep costs low but still need reliable data.
  • It worked. I didn’t experience any connection issues while exploring different parts of Montenegro, including both coastal towns and more rural inland areas. Speeds were solid for everything I needed—navigation, uploading content, checking emails, and video calls.
  • No weird surprises. No sneaky fees, no confusing setup, no stress.

Neither Kristen or I have tested it in other countries yet, so we can’t speak to the global performance—but if Montenegro is any indication, MobileSIM has potential as a reliable option in other destinations too.

Why MobileSIM Is Worth Trying

There are a growing number of eSIM providers out there, and while some stand out more than others, we always appreciate when a provider delivers a straightforward, affordable, and hassle-free experience. MobileSIM hit all three in Montenegro.

If you’re planning a trip here—or anywhere else in Europe—and want to avoid the roaming charges or the SIM card shuffle, this might be a good one to test out for yourself.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Check device compatibility. Most newer phones support eSIMs, but it’s always good to double-check before purchasing a plan.
  • Try it in multiple locations. As with any eSIM, performance can vary based on the local networks they tap into. We’ll continue testing MobileSIM in future destinations and report back.
  • Have a backup. While MobileSIM worked great in Montenegro, we still recommend having a second eSIM provider in mind—especially if you rely on data for work while traveling.

Final Thoughts

If you’re heading to Montenegro and want a budget-friendly eSIM that works right out of the gate, MobileSIM is definitely worth trying. We’re always excited to test out new travel tools, and this one left a positive first impression. Affordable, easy to use, and—most importantly—it did exactly what it promised.

We’ll be testing MobileSIM in more countries soon, but for now, we’re giving it a thumbs-up for Montenegro.

Have you tried MobileSIM or any other eSIM provider? What was your experience like?
