Couple Turns Backyard into Tiny House Community

We’re very excited to be partnering with Airbnb on a new video and blog series called Meet Your Host! Throughout the series, we’ll be sharing the stories of Airbnb hosts and how they turned their unique stays into thriving businesses. From an Artist who runs a Magical Dome Airbnb in the Jungles of Costa Rica to an ex-pilot from the UK who turned two Airstream into thriving Airbnb’s in Nosara, Costa Rica. Then there’s that Legendary Festival Grounds Turned Into Airbnb Glamping Getaway. We even share how we personally made $10,000 in our first month of being Airbnb hosts. In episode five, we’re sharing how Micah and Jana turned their backyard into a tiny house community that makes them $15,000 USD per month.

The Backstory

The first unique stay Micah and Jana listed on Airbnb is their modern tiny house. But, before hosting others in the tiny house, Micah and Jana spent three years living and traveling in it with their oldest son and pup. The goal was to live in the tiny space for a few years and eventually find a larger house and property where they could park the tiny house. Once their family of four became five, they started the hunt to find the perfect house and land.

Micah and Jana eventually found a property for sale online and even before seeing it in person, knew it was THE place. They bought it and within a month and a half, moved in, converted the backyard into a sanctuary and put their tiny house up on Airbnb. Fast forward to three years later, the tiny house has been continuously booked solid from day one and the duo has added two other unique rentals to their thriving Airbnb business…with a forth on the way.

The Property

Located only a short walk from Palma Sola beaches and less than five miles from world-famous Anna Maria Island beaches, is this tiny house community. When you first pull up to Micah and Janna’s home, you would never guess there are three Airbnb unique stays in their backyard. Once you walk through the backyard gate, you get that WOW factor.

To the right is a 1971 newly-converted Streamline conveniently located beside a hot tub, large salt-water pool and rock grotto with a waterfall and slide. In the far back corner is the tiny house. Between the two unique stays is a fire pit, children’s play place and chicken coop. Across from the tiny house is the Streamline washroom (that comes with an above ground tub) and bar. Above these two amenities is the beach loft. Anyone who stays in any three of the unique stays has access to the entire property and all its features.

Guests will also have access to super fast 300/mg wifi with a wire-mesh network for coverage over the whole property. If you work online like Siya and I, then you know this is a necessity for long-term stays.

Since Micah and Jana live on the property with their two young boys, dog, cat and a few chickens, guests tend to be family oriented people who enjoy children and animals. They also tend to be people who enjoy meeting and being around new people.

1971 Streamline Converted into Unique Rental

I may be bias, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the 1971 Streamline. Streamline, you say??? Yes, I know it looks almost identical to an Airstream, but it’s not.

Micah and Jana purchased the Streamline from a hippie couple who were living in it full-time. They designed the space to be open and full of bright, natural light. This unique space is equipped with lots of windows, a moderate kitchen (with a small fridge, microwave and two-burner stove top), hidden storage compartments, air conditioning and even a projector for movies. The Streamline is perfect for couples or small families and comes with a California king bed and a couch that can double as a twin sleeper. Only a few steps outside of the Streamline is a full, private bathroom with a shower and large tub. This space really MAKES this tiny house community.

Living Big in a Tiny House

The Tiny House that started it all! From the outside it looks tiny, but the inside feels spacious and can sleep up to four comfortably. Micah and Jana designed the space to be open and full of bright, natural light just like the Streamline. The tiny house has a white shiplap interior with 14 windows and an open layout featuring a full kitchen, bathroom, washer, dryer and two sleeping lofts (king and twin beds) on opposite ends. There is a pull-out sleeper sofa on the main floor. Double French doors open up to face the outdoor hangout area and pool. The space can sleep 4-5 people comfortably.

Loft Apartment for Two

Just above the garage is Micah and Jana’s third unique stay – a cozy 1-bedroom beach loft! This beautiful space is a perfect getaway for couples, solo adventurers, and small families.

The space has large windows that lets in a lot of natural light. The open layout featuring a full kitchen, cute bathroom with a large shower, washer & dryer and a modern bedroom with a live-edge headboard. The loft has two 65-inch 4k Smart TVs, in both the living room and bedroom. The bedroom has a king-sized bed and walk-in closet. There is a sectional sleeper sofa in the living room with a queen bed. The place is perfect for 2-4 people.

How Much Money Do Micah and Jana Make from hosting their Tiny House Community on Airbnb?

Since starting their Airbnb journey three years ago, Micah and Jana have been booked solid! The tiny house makes them roughly $5000 USD per month, while the Streamline makes them even more! The beach loft rents for less per night, so makes less than the other two, but is in demand just the same. The three unique stays pay for the couples mortgage and have given them the freedom to start other business ventures. What’s next? The couple is about to list their forth unique stay – a house boat!
