Top 10 Things You Need to Do in Slovenia

Slovenia surprised me with how many incredible things there are to see and do! Here are the top 10 things you need to do in the country.

10) Visit Metelkova

Metelkova is an autonomous social centre located in Ljubljana, the capital and largest city in Slovenia, and is home to some very “interesting” looking pieces of art. It’s located on the site of former military barracks and was squatted in 1993.

Today, the area is now made up of colourful buildings covered in murals, installations made using recycled materials, artist studios and night clubs.

9) Eat Local Food

Food alone is a driving factor for many people to travel. Indulging in local foods can add a lot to the full cultural experience.

Ljubljana has many delicious food joints serving up some local dishes. The best way to find them is by exploring by foot or even joining a food tour.

8) Visit the Museum of Illusions

While I don’t go out of my way to visit museums, I do make exceptions for exhibits like the Museum of Illusions. If you’re wondering how to spend an afternoon in the city of Ljubljana, this museum is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring the two floors of optical magic. If you really want to put your brain to the test, purchase one of the mind puzzles on your way out. It will make a great pastime in the airport or during a long drive.

7) Explore the Postojna Cave

The Postojna Caves are the largest tourist attraction in Slovenia.  This 24,120 m long cave system is the second largest in the country and the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

I found the best part of the experience to be the 2km train ride into the cave. At one point, you even pass through a cave room decked out with a large chandelier.

6) Visit Predjama Castle

The Predjame Castle is the largest cave castle in the world! This is another one of Slovenia’s largest tourist attractions.

If you’re already planning a trip to the Postojna Cave, you definitely should stop by Predjama Castle as both are connected to one another.

5) Eat at a Locals House

By far, my favourite dining experiences have been when I’ve enjoyed a meal either at a local joint or in the comforts of a local home.

In the small village of Goče, you can enjoy a five course at Cejkotovo homestead. This family run restaurant is unique as it’s located in the home of Davorin and Jelko Mesesnel. While Jelko works her magic in the kitchen cooking up some traditional dishes, Davorin serves up the food and invites you try his home made wine and liquors. You can even pay a visit to Davorin’s wine cellar, which is an experience in itself.

4) Soak in the Views at Lake Bled

This has to be one of the most beautiful spots in all of Europe. The combination of the crystal clear lake, large mountains and stunning church upon an island is enough to get every photographer excited.

The beauty of this spot is so breathtaking that it makes you re-think whether you’re looking at a real life landscape or a painting.

3) Take a Boat Ride to Bled Island

Not only can you enjoy the view of Bled Island from the shore, but you can actually take a boat ride to the island.

On the island stands a Gothic church in place of what once was a temple of the ancient Slavic goddess of love Živa. It is said that if you make a wish (it can’t be of anything material) and ring the church bell, it will come true.

2) Visit Bled Castle

Located only a short drive from Lake Bled is Bled Castle. Here, you can take in the view of the lake from a birds eye view while standing in front of a historical castle that reaches back to 1004.

You can even visit the castle printing press where you can view a printing demonstration on hand-made paper with historical blocks and lead letters.

1) Hike Around Bohinj Lake

Lake Bohinj is the largest lake in Slovenia. Many people who have visited Slovenia say that Lake Bled is the most beautiful lake they’ve ever seen…until they’ve visited Lake Bohinj.

For me, both lakes are equally beautiful and worth visiting. While I found Lake Bled to be more glamorous, Bohinj Lake has a tranquility to it and is less crowded. There’s something really special about being here in the winter time when the mountains and lake are covered with powdery snow.
