Traditional Mayan Healing at the Spa at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort

During my travels in Mexico, I indulged in a luxurious spa afternoon at the Spa at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort.  If you have been following my blog for the past few years, you know how much I love massages and try and treat myself to one in nearly every country I visit.  I think that it’s important to treat yourself and for me, an afternoon at the spa is the perfect way to do just that.

One of my favourite parts about getting a massage in another country is every place does it differently. It’s actually quite an amazing experience to travel around the world and see what massage means to different cultures.  At the Spa at the JW Marriott Cancun Resort, I received one of the best massages of my life!  I say that without any exaggeration.  From the moment you walk into the spa lobby, you are greeted with big smiles and the music playing is enough to send you into relaxation mode.  The colours throughout the spa are warm and inviting. There is a beautiful fountain and winding stairs that lead you to the waiting room that offers comfortable lounging chairs, delicious tea, fruit infused water, and tasty treats.  Upstairs is also where the change room, showers, steam rooms, hot and cold pools, sauna and massage rooms are located.  If you truly want the entire experience, it’s a good idea to get to the spa about an hour before your massage.  This gives you time to take advantage of the other facilities offered.  A massage that is followed by some time in the steam room (which allows the heat to open up your pours and also relax you) is better than going straight for the massage.

My experience at the Spa at JW Marriott Cancun Resort was like no other because I received a type of massage I’d never had before.   The 80 minute treatment is called “Balche” and was an essential element done in Mayan rituals to help them get connected to the cosmos and nature and help cure diseases.  Before the treatment begins, the masseuse starts a Mayan chant that translates to “I am the light, I am the peace, I am the love, I am the harmony,” followed by blowing the ocarina wind instrument. Then the masseuse begins the treatment with a external body cleansing using brown sugar and cinnamon exfoliation, followed by a relaxing massage with a mixture of oils from Mayan sacred herbs and Balche bark for relaxation and cleansing.  The massage ends the same way it starts with the masseuse blowing the ocarina.

Throughout the entire treatment, I felt like I was taken to another world full of happiness and tranquility. It was a truly unique and unforgettable experience that everyone should have in their lifetime.
